RM of Big River’s story
The Rural Municipality of Big River No. 555 was incorporated as a rural municipality on October 1, 1977. It surrounds the town of Big River, where the RM's office is located, and is governed by an elected council and an appointed administrator, who meet on the second Monday of each month.
Within its boundaries are the organized hamlets of Nesslin Lake and Phillips Grove, along with the localities of Bodmin, Chitek, Chitek Lake and Ladder Valley. Its eastern edge borders Prince Albert National Park.
Today the RM is known for its outdoor recreation. Several provincial campgrounds and recreation sites lie within it, including those at Shell Lake, Nesslin Lake, Ness Lake, Delaronde Lake (Zig Zag Bay), Chitek Lake and Bug Lake, as well as Big River Regional Park and Ski Timber Ridge.
